Patrol officers are the backbone of the department, and they are visible throughout town at all hours of the day. Their responsibilities include protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, and investigation of crimes. In a typical day, the patrol officer’s duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Arresting offenders
  • Assisting with traffic flow and collision reduction
  • Collecting and preserve evidence
  • Conducting preliminary investigations
  • Developing contacts
  • Identifying, apprehend and to assist with the facilitation of conviction of offenders
  • Inspecting the security of businesses and other property
  • Maintaining order and public peace
  • Performing various forms of community services
  • Preventing criminal and delinquent behavior
  • Preventing disruptions at public gatherings
  • Protecting lives and property
  • Providing information
  • Providing traffic direction
  • Repressing criminal and delinquent behavior
  • Responding to calls for service
  • Routinely patrolling and observing
  • Writing accurate reports
  • Testifying in court
  • Providing First Responder medical aid

Although most police departments throughout the country have similar responsibilities, the Longmeadow Police Department officers are unique in their delivery of services. You will find these patrol officers to be empathetic and committed to the problem solving philosophy. In a town-wide survey, the Police Department was selected as the #1 service provider in town. This is directly attributed to the patrol division and their professionalism.
