Vital Records
Copies
Certified copies of birth, death, and marriage records may be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Office in person, during regular business hours, or by mail.
The fee for a certified copy of a vital record is $10 per copy. For requests by mail, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped return envelope.
Call Ahead
It is recommended that you call ahead to verify that the record is on file with this office before making a request.
- Birth certificates are on file with the city/town in which the birth occurred as well as the city/town in which the mother resided at the time of the birth.
- Death certificates are on file with the city/town in which the death occurred as well as the city/town in which the person resided.
- Marriage certificates are only on file in the city/town in which the intention of marriage paperwork was filed.
Marriage License
Except for a few exceptional circumstances both parties must appear in person at the any Town Clerk’s Office in the Commonwealth to apply for a license to be married in Massachusetts.
Please call ahead to schedule an appointment.
The couple must complete and sign under oath in front of the Town Clerk an Intention of Marriage. Information that is essential in completing this form is your social security number, your place of birth and mother’s maiden name. The fee for filing the Intention is $35.00 (effective January 1, 2016)
Massachusetts requires a mandatory 3 day waiting period from the time the Intention of Marriage is filed before a Marriage License will be issued. A waiver from this period may be obtained from the Municipal Court.
A marriage license must be used within 60 days from the date of filing the Intention of Marriage.
