The Longmeadow Department of Public Works (DPW) will be conducting its spring hydrant-flushing program. Hydrant flushing will occur between 5:30 pm – 11:30 pm Monday through Thursday. The start date is Monday, May 1, 2023. Automatic hydrant flushers will also be dispersed throughout the system during these hours.
During this time, customers may notice episodes of decreased water pressure or discoloration of their water. Water discoloration results from temporary disturbances of the normal water flow within our distribution system. Theses short- term changes in flow can stir up naturally occurring minerals and sediment that settle within the water mains.
If you experience discolored water you are encouraged to run cold water through a facet (bathtubs being the best choice) for 5-10 minutes or until the water clears up. Do not use hot water or run your laundry machine as the dirty water can discolor clothing and enter your hot water heater and could possible damage it.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call the DPW office at 567-3400, or email publicworks@longmeadow.org.
Hydrants will be flushed in the following sequence: section 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
